Peterborough United 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Peterborough came into the game on the back of 5 consecutive defeats and they welcomed league leaders Wolves to London Road. Kenny Jackett will have been impressed with their recent away form as they were unbeaten coming into their game at 5th placed Peterborough.

Wolves started quickly as Leigh Griffiths got the opening chance as the ball was played to him out wide he found space to cut inside but his shot was over the bar. Posh then quickly played the ball forward and a Jack Payne through ball found Lee Tomlin but his shot with the outside of his boot went just wide. Wolves will have then been aggrieved that they didn’t get a penalty as it look clear that defender Mark Little handled in the area but the referee waved away the Wolves protests. Then Wolves started to gain control of the game as Griffiths had a shot straight at Olejnik. Sako had a free kick on the edge of box but it came to nothing as the ball was blocked by the wall. Then Wolves had probably the best chance of the half as on 24 minutes Michael Jacbos crossed but Griffiths headed over. On 30 minutes Peterborough had one of their few chances as Kyle Vassell lost possession of the ball it lay nicely for Mark Little to strike ambitiously and the curling effort went just wide. Just before half-time Wolves will have been disappointed not to go into the break a goal up as Bakary Sako ran into the box but blasted his effort into the side-netting.

Half-Time Score: Peterborough 0-0 Wolverhampton

The second-half saw Peterborough take control of the game as Tomlin had a free kick early into the half which was blasted straight into the wall. On the hour mark the decisive substitution was made as Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Kane Ferdinand came on for Peterborough. Soon after that Knight-Percival passed back short to Olejnik in goal but Griffiths failed to put away for the opener. Sako had a volley straight at the keeper. Mendez-Laing was showing a lot of flair down the left-wing and his run across the edge of the box set up a free-kick in a strong position. Michael Bostwick took the shot and his low drive was enough to win the game for Posh on 79 minutes.

Full-Time Score: Peterborough United 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

A scrappy game where both teams failed to string passes together in the final third and one goal was always going to be decisive in this game. Peterborough’s next game is in the FA Cup at home to Tranmere Rovers for a place in the 3rd round of the draw.

Kersal once again didn’t start the half well as Dave Coleman mis-cued a kick and ended up missing the ball allowing Vale to break and score less than a minute into the second half (0-31). Later in the half the scrappy and aggressive nature of the game suggested the conflict which was to occur as a fight broke out between a few players from both sides, reminiscent of the brawl when Vale of Lune last visited Kersal. This didn’t stop the confidence of Vale as they scored yet another try which was converted after some relentless pressure on the Kersal defence. Just 10 minutes later the visitors scored again as they touch down under the posts for another easy conversion.  Minutes later they scored again through Adam McLuskie after a long pass and he touches down to leave a difficult conversion which was skilfully put away (0-52). Altrincham Kersal 18-30 Liverpool St.Helens

Kersal were confident coming into this game and were looking for their third win on bounce. They started on the back foot with Liverpool St.Helens pushing forward quickly, but It was Kersal who took the lead through an 8th minute penalty from Harry Luscombe; but the lead didn’t last as Liverpool got into the game with a penalty of their own. Then they missed a penalty kick minutes later, but it counted for nothing as they scored a try straight after. Kersal fought back and replied with an un-converted try from Dean Harris. But just before half-time Liverpool scored a pen and Kersal missed their penalty chance.

Half-Time Score: Kersal 8-13 Visitors

The second half started brightly for Liverpool as they scored a penalty just minutes into the half. Kersal could’ve got back into the game as Wise was running at the defence and attempted the through ball which failed to make an impact, and they were made to pay for the missed chance. Two quick unanswered tries put the visitors in a commanding position, (8-30). But came the Kersal fightback as a maul pushed forward allowing Josh Cummiss to place down, but Luscombe failed to convert and minutes later a through ball, which Liverpool failed to deal with,  and Jack Wise grabbed the ball easily from Jake Hodson, and once again they failed to convert the try. The last few minutes Altrincham pushed in search of another try but it ended 18-30 to Liverpool.

Altrincham Kersal 36-29 Kirkby Lonsdale

After last week’s defeat at the hands of Kendal they were keen to get a win at home to Kirkby. They started brightly and took the lead after two minutes through a Luscombe penalty, and they should’ve extended their lead through Coleman just seconds later but they failed to convert. The miss wouldn’t come back to bite them as they extended the lead, Dave Coleman was found out wide and he sprinted through to get a try and it was converted. Kersal continue to attack the Kirkby defence and it didn’t take them long to get another try, as an overhead pass picked out the runner who touched down for the second try. There was something of a turning point for Kirkby after that as they started to get back into the game and they responded with two tries of their own, one converted. Kersal once again took control of the game with two more tries of their own.  Harry Luscombe converted both and scored the second running under the posts leaving an easy conversion.

Half-Time Score: Kersal 29-12 Kirkby Lonsdale

Kirkby, obviously disappointed from their first half performance, went all out in the second. Their pressure led to many mis-placed passes from Kersal and the inevitable happened as Kirkby straight away got back into the game as a clearance was blocked by an incoming Kirkby player and little was left to do but get the try. After the converted try Kirkby
continuously attacked and got a try around 10 minutes later but failed to convert. In the dying minutes it had looked like Kirkby had got a draw from the game after equalising through the last minute try but that wasn’t the end of it. The last effort of the game Kersal found space out right and Dave Coleman surged through to win Kersal the game 36-29.

That save would prove to be crucial as in the dying minutes Stockport Sports equalised as Jamie Tandy raced through, rounded the keeper and slotted home to give Sports an away point, and they may of left disappointed not to get all 3 points as after a shot across goal went just wide.

Rangers FC 2-0 Berwick Rangers

Rangers hosted Berwick in a Tuesday night Ramsdens Cup tie at Ibrox. Ally McCoist fielded a strong side. The hosts started the game with plenty of the ball and they pressed on the Berwick defence but the chance conversion was largely uninspiring as many of the passes went astray. The home side played many a through balls but their strikers failed to convert what seemed easy chances. After 23 minutes Andy Little took a shot in the box that lacked power that looked to just trickle over the line for it just to be cleared off the line by Michael Dunlop.  Berwick playing many men behind the ball with one main striker found the game tough but still managed to get a few chances as Emilson Cribari had a downward header hit the underside of the crossbar. Neither side managed to get a goal before half time so it ended 0-0.

Half Time Score: Rangers 0-0 Berwick

Rangers started brightly in the second half and Sebastian Faure had a volley tipped over the crossbar by the Berwick keeper. Despite the failure to convert that chance; Rangers brought on Barrie McKay to improve their chances and he scored straight after coming on;  McKay received the through ball and he cleverly dinked the ball over the Berwick keeper. It was only a couple minutes later when Rangers made it 2-0 through Little as he headed home Crawford’s cross. Rangers began to boss the game as they controlled the game stopping Berwick getting their chances away.
